INTRODUCTION
Is it true that only the righteous ‘sleep’ while the wicked simply ‘die’? Many have taught this idea, but it doesn’t hold water. Both the righteous and the wicked are described as sleeping or dying in Scripture. It’s time to set the record straight once and for all.
1. BOTH THE WICKED AND THE RIGHTEOUS SLEEP. Read Daniel 12:2 And many of them that SLEEP in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. READ ALSO For if we believe that Yahshua DIED and rose again, even so them also which SLEEP in Yahshua will Elohim bring with him (1 Thessalonians 4:14).
2. BOTH RIGHTEOUS AND WICKED DIE see Isaiah 26:19 Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the DEAD.
3. THE RIGHTEOUS DIE – 1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of Elohim: and the DEAD in Messiah shall rise first. Read also – John 11:25 Yahshua said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were DEAD, yet shall he live:
4 THE WICKED DIE – Revelation 20:5 But the rest of the DEAD lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
SOME SCRIPTURES THAT SHOW THE RIGHTEOUS DIE
Genesis 23:2
And SARAH DIED in Kirjath-arba; the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan: and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.
Genesis 25:8
Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and DIED in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.
Genesis 35:29
And Isaac gave up the ghost, and DIED, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
Genesis 50:16
And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before HE DIED, saying,
Genesis 50:26
So JOSEPH DIED, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
Job 42:17
So JOB DIED, being old and full of days.
Romans 5:8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, MESSIAH DIED for us.
Hebrews 11:13
THESE ALL DIED in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
SOME SCRIPTURES THAT SHOW BOTH RIGHTEOUS AND WICKED SLEEP IN THEIR GRAVES
1 Kings 2:10
So DAVID SLEPT with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.
1 Kings 11:43
And SOLOMON SLEPT with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.
1 Kings 14:20
And the days which Jeroboam reigned were two and twenty years: and HE SLEPT with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his stead. Compare 2 Chronicles 13:20 Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and the LORD struck him, and HE DIED.
1 Kings 14:31
And REHOBOAM SLEPT with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess. And Abijam his son reigned in his stead – he forsook the law, 2 Chronicles 12:1 And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.
1 Kings 15:8
And ABIJAM SLEPT with his fathers; and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. He was not a fully righteousness man, read (1 Kings 15:3; 2 Chronicles 13:13-18).
1 Kings 22:40
So AHAB SLEPT with his fathers; and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead. He was the most evil king of Israel (1 Kings 16:30-33).
1 Kings 22:50
And JEHOSHAPHAT SLEPT with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Jehoram his son reigned in his stead. He was a good man – 1 Kings 22:43(a) And he walked in all the ways of Asa his father; he turned not aside from it, DOING THAT WHICH was right in the eyes of the LORD.
2 Kings 8:24
And JORAM SLEPT with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead. He was a wicked man – 2 Kings 8:18 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as did the house of Ahab: for the daughter of Ahab was his wife: and he did evil in the sight of the LORD.
2 Kings 10:35
And JEHU SLEPT with his fathers: and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his stead. He was an evil man SEE 2 Kings 10:18 And Jehu gathered all the people together, and said unto them, Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu shall serve him much.
2 Kings 13:9
And JEHOAHAZ SLEPT with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria: and Joash his son reigned in his stead. He was a wicked man – 2 Kings 13:6 Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, who made Israel sin, but walked therein: and there remained the grove also in Samaria.)
2 Kings 13:13
And JOASH SLEPT with his fathers; and Jeroboam sat upon his throne: and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. He started well (2 Kings 12:1-14; 2 Chronicles 24:2) but ended badly (2 Chronicles 24:17-25).
2 Kings 20:21
And HEZEKIAH SLEPT with his fathers: and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead. Though he had few weakness as a human being, he is generally considered as a pretty good king (2 Kings 18:3-6; 2 Chronicles 29:3-19; 2 Chronicles 30:1-27)
2 Chronicles 33:20
So MANASSEH SLEPT with his fathers, and they buried him in his own house: and Amon his son reigned in his stead. He started as an evil king but repented later, read 2 Chronicles 33, to get his story.
CONCLUSION
We have established beyond reasonable doubt that the term death and sleep are used interchangeably for both the righteous and the wicked when they die. It is not true that the righteous sleep and the wicked die (Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment).
